Customer Review: I have to agree with many of the reviewers that indicate the information is extremely basic and the illustrations rarely add much, if any, value to the discussion. Since the target audience is probably women in the 35-55 range, the tone and silly cartoons would be more appropriate for a preteen target audience. I find the tone of the book patronizing at best, insulting at worst. I purchased this book after hearing Dr. Roizen interviewed on the radio. He indicated there were certain ingredients in soap and shampoo which should be avoided, but said you'd have to read the book to find out. However, I have yet to find any comment about this in the book! Perhaps if anyone else finds this info in this tome, they could post a comment. This was the type of factual, information I was looking for and have come up empty handed.
My other issue with the book is it's size. The publisher should encourage a smaller, more interesting and informational text, rather than these giant books that 2/3 of which is a waste of time. They want you to think that you're really getting your money's worth with this giant book, think again. Since most of his books are purchased by women, I suppose Dr. Roizen assumes women have the time to waste plowing threw these tomes, looking for the occasional tidbit of value. He has some great information, so I wished he would treat his book audience with more respect. In the future, I will stick to watching him on TV or listening on the radio ...

by Bobbi Brown
Amazon Price: $21.12
Customer Review: I'm a long-time Bobbi Brown fan, I wear her make-up daily, and have given her other books as gifts. Sadly, this book is a disappointing hodge-podge of material. The photography of the individual techniques doesn't show methods clearly, and nearly every model looks like she's wearing fuchsia blush! There are endless displays of BB products, but very little that will help the individual reader develop an attractive and polished look.
However, if you are starting out as a make-up artist, the book includes a huge section for this, and you might find it quite helpful.

Customer Review: This is a fascinating book, but one that could be improved. However, the positive (FOR, below) much outweighs the negative (AGAINST, below).
FOR: This book is full of interesting material, most of which is well explained. It follows how eusocial insects construct complex insect societies that display apparent group intelligence by using only a small number of chemical signals and stereotyped responses. It seeks to understand how such complex societies came to exist, based on the competing interactions of selection between indivuals within the colony, and selection between colonies or group selection. It reviews a wealth of material on how such societies operate from relatively simple colonies to the vast and elaborate super-colonies of the leaf cutter ants. Although the shortest chapter, I was fascinated by the evolution of the ants, particularly the Sphecomyrminae, an extinct early ant with properties both of an ant and a wasp. The graphics are stunning, both the line drawings and the photography. Visually it is one of the most beautiful books I have read for some time. The images of concrete casts of ant nests are a revelation.
AGAINST: The authors often over-complicate. For instance, in one section ("anonymity and specificity of chemical signals" p270) the simple idea that some signals are widely used and recognized by many ants in a colony while others are more specific, even down to the recognition of individuals, is introduced by comparison wit...

Customer Review: I love this book. It's fun, witty and informative. Just when you thought you knew it all, he gives you the real 411. This book is priceless. Even though I missed him when he came through my town, I was lucky enough to get an autographed, personalized "book plate" from Clinton. He's great and his book is FABU!!!!!

Customer Review: LOVE this book! Nina is gorgeous and knows of what she speaks. The 100 are timeless classics, with a fashion-editor's twist. The book is fun, the illustrations are beautiful, and the advice is valuable with an "insider's" edge.
Makes an excellent gift.

Customer Review: This is my third year as a proud owner of the Shoe Calendar. No only do I find it to be a great way to start each new day at work, but co-workers look forward to seeing the "shoe of the day". I recommend it to anyone lucky enough to realize the enjoyment of looking at shoes from all different generations, countries, and styles.

Customer Review: The plot is somewhat similar to "Brave New World"--a future society where humans are surgically altered to fulfill various roles. Tally begins the trilogy as an 15 year old "ugly"--not yet surgically improved, and is filling time waiting to join her older "pretty" friends who have been made supermodel beautiful (but vapid) on their 16th birthdays and are filling their lives with parties in "New Pretty Town". She meets Shay, another 15 year old who tells her about the Smoke, a place where people have escaped surgery and are living in the wild. Shay tried to convince Tally to join her in escaping to the Smoke before their surgery but Tally stays behind, wanting to become pretty and join her friend Peiris in New Pretty Town. However on the day of her surgery Tally is taken instead to Special Circumstances, and told she will be ugly forever unless she can find Shay and lead the authorities to the Smoke. I wont reveal more spoilers but let me assure you that the plot moves rapidly with lots of action, many different aspects of the future societies revealed, and decent character development. Both my daughter and my son devoured these, so I picked them up and couldn't put them down either. They are easy reading, but are full of themes and ideas that will engage adolescents--environmentalism,ecological disasters, human nature, identity formation, love, friendship, rebellion, conformity, cliques, choices, and conflicting desires.

by Charla Krupp
Amazon Price: $17.15
Customer Review: Style self-help books for aging Boomers and Gen-Xers are conspicuous on every bookstore shelf nowadays - Amazon alone has over 3500. I've read about 10 myself, from different authors, and gotten some good fashion and style advice. Charla Krupp's new book, "How Not to Look Old," purports to show those of us over 40 how to drop 10 years and 10 pounds in 10 minutes just by following her advice.
Most of her recommendations are basic fashion and health advice: lose the mommy jeans, get fitted for the right bra, don't show your thong, wear sunscreen, and most surprising for a fashion editor, don't wear heels over 2-1/2 inches. Some are more quixotic (wear only pink lipstick, wear nude fishnets) or financially infeasible (buy $300 sunglasses). Some are clearly off-base for anyone outside the LA-influenced fashion world (as a 43-year-old university professor, nude stockings are a classroom staple - bare legs are not an option in freezing Boston, and her recommended black tights with peep-toe platforms would look ridiculous), but she lost me when she recommends injecting Restylane into your earlobes to correct earring droopage! That's just gross.
Tiger Lily is right: Krupp's approach to Y&H (young & hip) is one-size-fits-all, and individuality is out. She wants to make you look like her. If you're in a fashion and beauty rut, this book can help you break out of it, but if you are relatively Y&H already, there's not much new here. I would recommend rea...

Customer Review: I pre-ordered this book and waited with baited breath and nibbled fingernails awaiting its arrival as I have nothing but the highest praises for Lucky's Shopping Manual. However, like many reviewers, I too was struck with a moment of disappointment that this book was not as Fashion 101 as their seminal text. Having taken a couple of months with the book, I realized the fundamental difference between the two: The Lucky Shopping Manual is the Introductory Course for newbies, and budding fashionistas. The Lucky Style Manual is more of a 200/300 level course, so if you begin there, you'll be like, "huh?? Wait a minute... did I miss something?"
As an owner of both texts I can appreciate how timeless and Back to Basics the Shopping Manual (1) is and how the Style Guide (2) moves into "Mastery" just as the title suggests.
If you are consistently drawn to fringe and bohemian prints, there is a way to master this look. Chuck Taylors and leather moto jackets? There is a way to master this look as well. If you are a straight up Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Crisp, white, button up girl, then the American Classic section has a robust collection of outfits, accessories, and icons for your perusal.
Lastly, through a careful read of the text, you will come to realize that like most women you aren't just one, monolithic, style ALL the time. Sometimes you want to switch it up, spice it up, or pare it down. What the book provides is OPTIONS for you to do...
