Remodel Plumbing (For Pros by Pros)
by Rex Cauldwell
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: I am a DIYer with a fair amount of experience -- however I am new the the world of plumbing. This book is well-written, logically organized, and easy to read. It covers the important basic stuff in great detail to get novices pointed in the right direction (how to sweat pipes, pros/cons of different types of pipe material, etc), yet contains tons of tips and tricks for the experienced amateur/pro for all phases of common tasks. This is the plumbing book that I crack open first when I need to look something up. Highly recommended.

Affordable Remodel: How to Get Custom Results on Any Budget
by Fernando Pages Ruiz
Amazon Price: $14.93
Customer Review: This book is geared towards getting the most out of your contractor and ideas that are cost effective. I was hoping for ideas for the average person to do themselves or at least options, and it's not that. It's more about choosing between competing ideas, building and bid options and such. If that's what you're looking for then this is the book for you. If your looking for ways to reorganize a space or move an island, wall, ect. this is NOT the book for you.

Magic Lantern Guides: Pentax K20D
by Peter K. Burian
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: At the price I paid, about $20, this book was not much of a deal, and it offered only a little more insight into to the K20d than the original product manual. If you're new to DSLRs and want to supplement the original lackluster Pentax manual, there are no other K20d books available. As an alternative, you might try to fill in the gaps on by searching the web for informative articles.

Things that I did not like about this book include 1) the author's lack of criticism of any aspects of the K20d, and 2) the book's tendency to read like a list of features and instructions without much art or creativity. As to the first point, the K20d is a great camera, with many fine attributes, but it has some annoying characteristics. Burst speed is somewhat slow, the screen is pathetic compared to other cameras in its class, and Live View is utterly worthless on this camera. A well-written book would have admitted the camera's problems and offered work-arounds and insights to deal with those issues. This book read as if it had cleared Pentax corporate headquarters before printing. I prefer a touch of irreverence.

As to the second point, this book follows all-too-common product guidebook example of being charmless, uncreative, and utterly lacking in character.

At least it is readable. It does not make any glaring mistakes. And by reading it you will certainly know more than you would by relying only on the Pentax K20d manual.

Kitchen Redos, Revamps, Remodels, And Replacements: Without Murder, Madness, ...
by Jan Weimer
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: If you're looking for the "best ever" kitchen book, look on. This one is just average. It's outdated and, unless you're a complete beginner in the remodeling game, won't tell you much you haven't already learned or thought of on your own. (Just for example: the author is clueless about butcher-block countertops, saying that they must be scrubbed with a wire brush every week. ??? I've had butcher block countertops, and neither I nor anyone I've ever known has been silly enough to use them as unfinished cutting boards. And do we really need to be told that countertops should be level and cleanable? Oh, darn, I was thinking about a wavy sod surface--I guess that's out.) "This Old House Kitchens," although far from new, is far more helpful. I was disappointed after the rave reviews here. I probably paid around $15 incl. shipping and it wasn't worth that much.

Candy Making Basics
by Evelyn Howe Fryatt
Amazon Price: $11.72
Customer Review: I am new to candy making so I bought this book since it's supposed to be "basic". It is absolutely awful! I made two batches of fudge (one called "never fail"). The first never set and the second cooked down so much it was harder than a rock. I've never experienced a cookbook that left out as many steps as this one or was as inconsistant. First, some crucial steps were left out like letting the fudge cool down to 110 degrees before beating it (this is in a sidenote in the front under "tips"). One would think that such an important step would be included in the recipe itself. Second, in one recipe she states that it should take 10 minutes to get to soft ball stage, in another it should take 7 minutes and others it takes 30 minutes. Why the difference? I can tell you from experience that it should NOT be cooked for 30 minutes. I am unable to trust any recipe in this book. I've had great success with recipes on the internet. That's where I'd suggest getting recipes before buying this terrible book.

Has the author ever made fudge?
